Case Study: Eykona Technologies
When the academic founders of Eykona (www.3dwoundimaging.com) came to us, they were looking for markets for a truly innovative method of creating 3D models of real world assets. Whilst working in Oxford University’s Department of Engineering, Professor Ron Daniels and Dr Jamie Patterson had developed a simple point-and-press handheld camera that could create 3D images with full colour and reflectance – with the potential to truly democratise 3D image generation. This was a classic technology looking for a market, and over twelve months H2O worked closely with Ron and Jamie, as well as ISIS Innovations (the technology transfer arm of Oxford University) to research and validate the lead markets. Medical Imaging ultimately became our focus, with strong buy-in from key opinion leaders on both sides of the Atlantic, and H2O was able to develop a compelling business case, recruit sector-specific management, and raise first round investment.
H2O and the Chariot Fund continues to work with Eykona, to take the technology into India as a telemedicine tool, to allow the consultant diabetologists of our not-for-profit partners such as MV Diabetes to project their expertise beyond the urban centres, to monitor and treat patients from amongst the rural poor.
